Shepherds

The South Anchorage congregation does not currently have shepherds.

In the New Testament, elders are the presbyters (1 Timothy 4:14); bishops (Philippians 1:1; 1 Timothy 3:1-2); overseers (Acts 20:28; 1 Peter 5:2); pastors (Ephesians 4:11-12); and shepherds (1 Peter 5:1-4).

The word "pastor" is just another word for "shepherd." Each congregation is to appoint qualified men to serve as Elders. (Acts 14:23; Titus 1:5). The elders are the pastors (shepherds) of a single local congregation (1 Peter 5:1-4). These (Pastors) elders are to guide, guard, and feed the flock of God with His word. (1 Peter 5:1-4; Acts 20:28; 1 Timothy 5:17; Hebrews 13:17).

Only men can serve as elders, but not every man is called. The Holy Spirit provided qualifications for those who would shepherd the flock. These qualifications are listed in 1 Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:5-13.

Elders are to be an example to all people, and they must be knowledgeable in the Word. It is their work to defend against false teaching and guide their congregation in God's will.

The Scriptures require that more than one man serve as an elder in the local congregation. The Bible says "elders" [plural] were appointed in every church (Acts 14:23; Acts 20:17-18, 28). The Scriptures never teach that a single Pastor rules over the local congregation.
